Regarding President Trump’s Executive Orders on International Travel Restrictions

The International Society for the History of Philosophy of Science (HOPOS) is committed to the cooperative ideal of scholarship, and supports the scholarly activity of researchers and students around the world.  For these reasons, and in solidarity with the victims of discriminatory travel prohibitions, we condemn the Executive Orders that the President of the United States issued on 27 January 2017 and 6 March 2017.  Any unreasonable restriction on the mobility of scholars and students unduly interferes with the free exchange of ideas upon which academic organizations such as HOPOS are premised.  Indeed, discriminatory prohibitions on travel, by the United States or any other country, limit accessibility to our biennial congresses, which have been our most successful vehicles for promoting scholarship in the history of philosophy of science.  In condemning these Executive Orders, HOPOS is in agreement with many other academic societies and organizations, and affirms its commitment to taking actions that will safeguard our ability to serve a genuinely international community of scholars.
